Ehagay Nakoda Traverse
June 4 2023

Continuing our trend of big sendy alpine days, Jake Draper and I decided to try out a linkup traversing over all the peaks of the Ehagay Nakoda massif, starting and finishing at the same spot in town. The Ehagay Nakoda massif includes many of the popular hikes/scrambles in Canmore, Ha Ling, Miner's Peak, Lawrence Grassi, and Ship's Prow and we'd be starting headed up the Rice Bowl route of Ha Ling.

A climber reaching the top of the amphitheater that can be used to link up Miner's Peak and Mount Lawrence Grassi with views of the Goatview massif behind.

When Jake and I did this route there was very limited beta available and the only information I could find on the Miner's Peak to Lawrence Grassi section involved losing some elevation and ascending in an amphitheatre up steep terrain. This line was exceptionally high risk and technical to be considered a scramble, so I would not recommend it to anyone without a sizable amount of experience. Since doing it I've done this section again and from Miners the ridge can be followed to reach Lawrence Grassi, but it still involves 5th class and exposure so not for most scramblers!

Following that crux, the route was relatively straightforward from peak to peak to find the easiest line, and the descent to Grassi Knob was a great way to wrap it up. The ridge can be stuck to the entire way but that's a proper climb and I have yet to do it, perhaps I'll go for it and release a trip report on it sometime soon.
