The Canmore Mountain List

The Canmore Mountain List is a passion project Troy Martel and I came up with in 2020. We had ascended a few of the peaks around Canmore together and eventually got to thinking "what if we did everything we can see from here?!" We wanted to make it legit so over the next weeks we scoped out all the peaks we could see from within the official town of Canmore boundary and started compiling the list! Once the list was done it served as a nice mountain outings to do list over the next couple years, but by late 2022 completing the list was my primary goal outside of biathlon. Some of the toughest outings like the Inglismaldie to Peechee Traverse or the Anklebreaker Traverse pushed me past my limits at the time and played a big part in the mountaineer I am today!

This map contains every peak on The Canmore Mountain List; every named peak visible from within the official town of Canmore boundary, as well as every unnamed peak with 91m or 300ft of prominece. The Canmore Mountain List idea didn't start off including unnamed peaks but after Troy got more into multi-pitch climbing and less into scrambling / bushwhacking slogs it turned into a personal project of mine and I decided to expand on the idea a bit! The light blue points on the map were outings I had partners for and the dark blue points were solo outings so as you can tell, north of Banff was a lonely endeavor. Although realistically, the majority of the peaks I did north of Banff would be of no interest to someone not attempting to complete The Canmore Mountain List aside from maybe Mystic Peak, Mount Brewster, or Cascade Mountain's main summit unless they're really hurting for something to do or looking to go where not many have set foot before!

Something I definitely wouldn't have expected prior to completing the list is how much more technical some of the niche routes and traverses around Canmore are compared to the Rundle Traverse, which has an infamous and gnarly reputation likely in part to keep the unprepared away because of how accessible it is to start from the easy scramble up the East End of Rundle. On this list you'll find numerous outings that stand on par with the Rundle Traverse in difficulty and a few that surpass it by a good margin. Some of the less done traverses that you've never heard of around Canmore are relatively unknown for a reason!

Hopefully my reports from completing The Canmore Mountain List can be of some use to you, and for those wanting to get after some of these routes you can go into them with more beta than I had at my disposal! Although I alone completed the list it was a joint effort with Troy Martel to create it and without him, ascending Little Sister would have been all but impossible for me without a guide with my skillset at the time so a massive shout out to him!
