Goatview Traverse
July 1 2023

The Goatview massif is a long ridge of peaks just west of the Smith Dorrien. Despite being visible from Canmore between East End of Rundle and Ha Ling, Goatview is largely untouched and you'd be hard pressed to find any information on it, until now! I had absolutely zero beta on how to get up Goatview so it proved to be a test in routefinding and I used photos from other nearby peaks to find a line.

The view looking southwest from just past the first high point along the Goatview massif with views of Kananaskis Country stretching far into the distance.

With a number of the peaks along the massif having a decent amount of prominence I opted for a traverse from south to north, and while I did wonder if it would get technical following the ridge, reaching the first high point proved to be the crux of the trip. Starting from Goat Pond I used a scree drainage for the initial gain before contouring left and eventually reaching the lower ridge which I followed for the rest of the day. The early section ended up having a couple quite technical spots so rather than aiming for the ridge I would've been better off scrambling to the right up the SW face towards the first peak. Aside from the initial difficulty the ridge was cruisy and after reaching the last peak and doing some routefinding back to the Goat Creek trail all that was left was the jog back to the car!
